Fundamentalist Feline
Nov 6th, 2007 by Cory

I think our new cat is a fundamentalist Christian. He’s afraid of things he doesn’t understand. The first few weeks we had him, we kept him in our bedroom to keep him safely away from the stairs and our older cat. The world outside our room was strange and scary. As he’s matured, his world has expanded, but the premise has stayed the same. He’s scared of anything that happens outside our house and terrified of anything that comes in from the outside.
Fundamentalists of all religions show similar patterns of fear. The Catholic church was terrified of Galileo’s heliocentric views. Evangelical Christians abhor the idea of teaching evolution, but don’t question why they need to get a new flu shot every year. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) was opposed to stem-cell research until a heartbreaking case was presented to him and he decided to actually educate himself about the issue.
Let’s hope with continued exposure, our kitten Harold will stop being scared of everything. I hope the same thing can be said of other fundamentalists.
